Harvest Picking event takes place Saturday

OXFORD -- Newton Trails is once again celebrating the fall season with food and entertainment at Old Church in Oxford, an event that will double as a fundraiser.

Harvest Picking at Old Church will take place Saturday, with dinner provided by Burrito Loco and served on the lawn at 5 p.m. followed by performances by local talent at 6 p.m. inside Old Church.

Performers will include Andy Offutt Irwin, a traveling storyteller, humorist, singer, songwriter and musician; New Georgia Railroad featuring Dan and Perri Walden, playing music from the Appalachian Mountains on fiddle, guitar and banjo; and Johnny Roquemore and the Apostles of Bluegrass, bringing "upbeat music and offbeat lyrics," according to a press release from Newton Trails.

Last year was the first Harvest Picking event and more than 100 people attended.

"The performances were really good. So many people left the church saying, 'This has to be an annual event,' so we're just keeping our promise to them. We're lucky to have some really talented musicians," said Newton Trails Chairman Maurice Carter.

Tickets to the dinner are $8 per person, and the concert is $10 per person or $25 per family.

The event serves as a fundraiser for the Newton County Trail-Path Foundation.

"We try to leverage our non-profit status to aid local governments doing trail-related activities ... There are some places that offer grants to non-profits but not for governments. So we try to leverage our non-profit status to provide the (matching funds) needed for construction or else provide other amenities like benches, bike racks, signs, trash cans, picnic tables or playground equipment," Carter said.

Saturday's event will also feature auctions of two prize packages including a "Day on the River" package with a guided kayak tour of the Yellow River, picnic and other treats and a "Covington Play-Shop-Dine-Sleep" package with everything needed for a day and night on the town.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.newtontrails.org or at the door the night of the event.
