COVINGTON -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting of a man by two Newton County Sheriff's Office deputies in the early morning hours today.
According to NCSO Lt. Tyrone Oliver, deputies were summoned to Milton Way in western Newton County around 2:15 a.m. with reports of a man out in the street firing his gun.
"When deputies arrived, they confirmed that is what the man was doing and when they ordered him several times to put his gun down, he pointed the gun at them. Both deputies fired," Oliver said.
He said the man was taken to a local hospital. His condition was unknown at 5 a.m. and Oliver said at that time his name was being withheld.
It is standard procedure for the GBI to investigate cases of an officer-involved shooting.
Milton Way is located near the intersection of Ga. Highways 212 and 20.
