Hazelbrand Road will be closed at its intersection with U.S. Highway 278 beginning Monday and continuing for 30 days, the Georgia Department of Transportation has announced.
A detour using Martin and Floyd streets will be in place. Advance warning signs and barricades will be located at intersections prior to the closure.
Pittman Construction Company was awarded a $15 million federal stimulus funded project in January 2010. The project consists of widening Ga. Highway 142 from south of U.S. 278 to Industrial Boulevard and includes widening of U.S. 278 a half mile in each direction from its intersection with Ga. Highway 142. The project ties to Interstate 20 at the Ga. Highway 142 interchange. Ga. Highway 142 will be widened to four lanes and U.S. 278 will be widened to six lanes. Both will have a raised median, curb and gutter and 5-foot sidewalk. The scheduled completion date is Oct. 31, 2012.
As with all road construction, motorists are advised to use extra caution in construction work zones.
Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures and delays due to inclement weather. Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at www.511ga.org.
