Artists to render Olde Town Conyers to canvas in 'Paint Out'

CONYERS — Olde Town Conyers in the fall is not just a time of the year but a subject that artists will put on canvas this Saturday for the first ever Olde Town Paint Out and Plein Air Exhibit.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, when participants will set up their easels and brushes to paint scenes of the historic Olde Town business district.

The paintings will be displayed for a reception from 7:30 to 8 p.m. and judged by Atlanta artist Charles Young Walls for first, second and third place awards.

The event is hosted by the Olde Town Gallery and businesses of Olde Town.

Lyndia Ellis, director of studio art classes at the Olde Town Gallery, said the idea is to promote the arts but also promote Olde Town as a destination for visitors.

"Olde Town Conyers is a beautiful little town and not enough people know about it, but artists are always looking for venues to paint beautiful things," she said. "I know some artists, I'm an artist myself, so I try to make connections with them to bring them in so people from the metro Atlanta area will know about Olde Town Conyers."

Ellis added that once the show is over and the awards presented she and the event organizers hope the paintings will advertise Conyers.

"Plein Air," is French for "in the open air," and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. There are Plein Air events held across the country throughout the year. There is even an association, Plein Air Painters of America, dedicated to the art both as a genre and activity.

The artwork will stay on display at the Olde Town Gallery all of next week. A people's choice award will be handed out during the Paint Out's closing reception at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, to coincide with the Olde Town Fall Festival.

Ellis explained festival-goers will have a chance to view the artwork and vote throughout the day on which piece will be awarded the people's choice.

The closing reception is open to the public with an admission of $10. Wine and cheese will be served during the reception. All proceeds go toward supporting the Olde Town Gallery's community art programs and classes.

Registration for artists is $40 with checks made to Olde Town Gallery and Studio. Registration may be done using a PDF file at www.oldetowngallery.tumblr.com or in person at the gallery, located at 909 Commercial St., Conyers.

Judged winners will receive cash awards for their work -- $300 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. There will also be two honorable mention awards.
