Dr. George C. Israel, Sr of Conyers, Georgia passed away 5 October 2011. Dr. Israel was born in Byron, Georgia, December 30, 1923. He attended Lanier High for Boys in Macon, Georgia in 1941. He joined the US Army in 1943 and served during WWII in the Medical Corp until 1945. He was a graduate of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia with BSD in 1951 and from there went on to Emory University Dental School and graduated in 1953 with his DDS. Dr. Israel's first dental Practice was opened in Conyers, Georgia in 1953 before starting his Preceptorship in Endodontics in 1957 with Dr. James H. Sherard, Jr. In 1963 he decided to open his Endodontic Practice in Decatur, Georgia, which grew into the corporate Practice of Israel, Stiefel, Tyber, Jones Inc. in 1969.
In addition to his dental Practice, Dr. Israel served on the Faculty of Emory University Dental School starting in 1954 where he was Associate Professor and also served as Acting Chairman from 1974-1975 of the Endodontic Department. He also maintained membership and served on various committees in the Georgia Dental Association, American Association of Endodontists, and was a Diplomate of Board of Endodontics. He fully retired from dentistry when he sold his Practice to Timothy Grubb in 1985. Outside of his work, Dr. Israel had a full life - married to the love of his life, Jeanne McKinney Israel, who he married in 1945 in Harlem, Georgia. They celebrated their 66th year together this summer at Covenant Place in Gardendale, Alabama, where Jeanne still resides. He also played golf and had standing foursomes for years at Druid Hills Country Club, the Atlanta Athletic Club, and other various courses around the metro Atlanta/Conyers area. The Israels traveled extensively through the years and are blessed with many friends all over the country. In addition to his wife, surviving Dr. Israel are two children George C. Israel, Jr and Carolyn Kaye Israel, spouses Lillian Lyle Israel and Stephen Glenn Taylor, beloved grandchildren, William McKinney Israel and wife Caldwell Collins Israel, John Lyle (JB) Israel and wife Olga Mytsiura Israel, and Sarah Eleanor Israel. The Israel family will be celebrating Dr. Israel's life on Saturday in Gardendale at a private memorial service.
