Bulldogs, Patriots on hunt for state playoff berths

A pair of local volleyball teams will take their shot at earning a berth to the state playoffs starting today. At the Area 8-AAAA volleyball tournament at Habersham Central, both Rockdale and Heritage will play quarterfinal matches with two of the four state playoff spots on the line.

Rockdale, the defending area champions and the top seed from the South division, will take on the south's No. 5 Cedar Shoals in a 5 p.m. match. The Jaguars won two matches Tuesday, including a 25-13, 25-13 victory over No. 6 seed Salem, to advance to the quarterfinals.

Heritage, the No. 3 seed from the South, will play Apalachee, the No. 2 from the North, at 6 p.m. If the Bulldogs and Patriots win, the local rivals will play in the area semifinals Saturday.

Patriots Looking to be No. 3

The Heritage softball team will try and nab a No. 3 seed for the state tournament at 5 p.m. today. That's when the Patriots, 23-9, play Habersham Central (21-11) in the third-place game in the Region 8-AAAA Tournament at Loganville High School.

Heritage, which clinched a spot in the Class AAAA State Tournament with a sweep of Salem in a best-of-three series Sept. 27, was swept by two-time defending region champion Madison County in the semifinals Saturday. Madison and Loganville play at 7 p.m. for the league championship and No. 1 seed in the state tournament, which begins Oct. 12.

Youth football homecoming set
