CONYERS -- Firefighters with the Rockdale County Department of Fire and Rescue raised nearly $1,000 Saturday at the Conyers Walmart and also received a $2,500 donation through the Walmart Foundation.

Money raised and collected Saturday will go toward outfitting the department's original 1951 pumper truck in time to have it completed for the annual community Christmas parade and tree lighting. The event will also mark the department's 60th anniversary.

The firefighters raised money by selling hot dogs, desserts and commemorative T-shirts and plates and 9/11 medallions in front of the store Saturday. The Fire and Rescue's 1968 Engine was also on location for tours which attracted children and adults, according to Sharon Webb, fire safety educator with the Rockdale Fire and Rescue.

An advisory board of firefighters has been formed to oversee the restoration work and donations. Anyone interested in making a tax deductible donation can contact Apparatus Operator Stacy Smith at 770-652-2844 or Fire Safety Educator Sharon Webb at 770-278-8401. Webb can also be reached by email at sharon.webb@rockdalecounty.org.
