PORTERDALE -- A group of interested residents will host a forum of candidates for elective office in Porterdale on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Porterdale Mill Lofts. The event begins at 7 p.m.
Michael Patterson, Porterdale resident and chairman of the Candidates Forum Committee, said he has received verbal confirmation from all of the candidates in the City Council and mayoral elections, although not all have officially confirmed their participation.
Candidates in the Nov. 8 election include: Mayor Bobby Hamby and opponent Arline Chapman, who resigned from her Post 3 council seat in order to seek the mayor's seat; Council Post 1 incumbent Robert Foxworth and challenger Anita Rainey; and Council Post 2 incumbent Linda Finger and challenger Darlene Savage.
Due to Chapman's resignation, Porterdale will hold a special election in conjunction with the regular election to fill the Post 3 seat on the council. Candidates in that race are Terry Barnes and Tim Savage.
According to Patterson, the bi-partisan event format will allow each candidate five minutes to make an opening statement followed by a question and answer session with questions from the audience. Each candidate will have one minute to answer each question, and the candidate's opponent will be given equal time to respond to the same question. Patterson will moderate the forum with assistance from Kenny French.
Following the Q&A session, candidates will have time to mingle with audience members for a meet and greet session. Refreshments will be served.
In addition to the forum, Patterson has organized a voter registration drive in Porterdale Oct. 3-7. Voter registration forms will be available at Porterdale City Hall, the Porterdale Library, Burnie's BBQ, Porterdale Bar & Grill, Jimbo's Grill, and Porterdale Mill Lofts. The deadline to register for the Nov. 8 election is Oct. 11.
