CONYERS -- The Hospital Authority of Rockdale County elected a new slate of officers and thanked outgoing chairwoman Ethel Boyle and outgoing member Terry Taschwer for their service.

Benny Atkins, president and CEO of National EMS was elected as the authority's new chairman during a meeting Tuesday. Allen Jones was voted as vice chairman and Beth Andersen retains her role as secretary/treasurer.

Boyle and Taschwer completed two three-year terms on the authority and are required to roll off. Both served during a turbulent time in the hospital's history that led to the sale of the facility to LifePoint Hospitals in 2009.

They also served as the Hospital Authority redefined its mission a grant-making entity to promote health care among county residents.

"We owe them our gratitude for their hard work, especially leading up to the February 2009 sale of the hospital to LifePoint and then during the transition as we evolved into a grant-making entity," Atkins said in a press release. "Ethel has been an outstanding board chair with incredible leadership skills, and Terry has provided us with invaluable financial expertise and also great insight. They will be greatly missed."

Boyle, a resident of Rockdale County since 1976, also has served on the Board of Education, the Board of Elections, the County Parks and Recreation Commission, among numerous other Boards and has volunteered with the Good Samaritan Thrift Store, the Rockdale Hospital Auxiliary, the American Cancer Society and more.

She is the 2011 recipient of the Beta Sigma Phi International's Aggie Gazzola Memorial Award, "honoring women who, not seeking praise or recognition, quietly do good works in our community."

"Health care is very important to quality of life, so I found it very rewarding to be a part of the decision-making process," Boyle said.

Taschwer, meanwhile, moved to Rockdale County in late 1994. He was heavily involved in the Jaycees and continues to believe in the Jaycee creed, which concludes with the statement "that service to humanity is the best work of life."

"When you live in a community, you have an obligation to give back to that community. I am glad that I was able to give back in this way," said Taschwer, a Commercial Manager for Pratt Industries.

Soon after moving to Rockdale, Taschwer began volunteering on an advisory board for the Rockdale County government. He also served on the county's zoning Board of Appeals for eight years.
