Conyers Police seek Atlanta man in shooting

CONYERS -- The Conyers Police Department is looking for an Atlanta man wanted in connection with a Thanksgiving Day shooting.

Lt. Jackie Dunn said an arrest warrant has been issued for Marcus Mandela Campbell, 19, charging him with aggravated assault in connection with the shooting. Other charges are pending, Dunn added.

Police were called to the entrance to Meadows Crossing apartments on Irwin Bridge Road at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday where a 21-year-old Conyers man had been shot in his car. Dunn said several 911 calls from residents were made immediately after the shooting, with one coming from the victim himself.

"He advised that he had been shot," Dunn said. "Officers arrived on the scene and he had multiple gunshot wounds, including a shot to the face. He was responsive, was able to talk to (the officers), and give them information."

Dunn said officers learned that a male juvenile had been in the car with the victim at the time of the shooting, but he fled prior to officers' arrival.

Dunn said the victim and his passenger met up with the suspect, who drove up in a car. The suspect then got in the back seat of the victim's car.

"At some point he pulled a gun and told them he was robbing them and to empty their pockets, and for whatever reason, started shooting," Dunn said.

The suspect reportedly fled in a dark-colored, four-door passenger vehicle. A lookout issued for Campbell describes him as "armed and extremely dangerous." Campbell is described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighing 130 pounds, with multiple tattoos on his forearms, hands and knuckles. The victim and suspect apparently knew each other, but the juvenile passenger did not know the suspect, Dunn said.

A handgun was found at the scene, but Dunn said it had not been determined if it was the gun used in the shooting.

The victim was Lifeflighted to an Atlanta area hospital where he underwent surgery. He was listed in stable condition on Friday.
