GHSA adds sixth classification

The GHSA Reclassification Committee has placed schools in six classifications, starting with the 2012-13 academic year. The move affects all six schools in Rockdale and Newton Counties.

Newton (projected enrollment of 1,526 students) will remain in the state's highest classification -- now Class AAAAAA -- and will be joined by county neighbor Alcovy (1,609) and Rockdale (1,441), which both move up from Class AAAA.

County rivals Heritage (1,244) and Salem (1,187) will join the new Class AAAAA, while Eastside, which has the smallest projected enrollment in the area at 1,066 students, will become a member of Class AAAA.

Member schools have the opportunity to choose to play at a classification higher than the class where they were placed by their enrollment numbers. Schools wishing to play-up should submit a request to move up in classification form to the GHSA office by Dec. 5.
