The Salem boys basketball team stayed unbeaten at the Lanier High School Shootout in Sugar Hill. The Seminoles, who got 31 points from Dedrick Turner in a season-opening win over Henry County, followed it with a pair of wins Monday.
First, the Seminoles rolled past Lumpkin County, 87-46, as four players reached double figures in scoring. Marques McKoy led the way with 15 points, while Jaquan Davis and Zach Bailey added 12 each as the Seminoles ran out to a 23-2 lead to start the game and cruised from there.
"Once we got out it was no looking back," said Salem coach Darren Wilkins. "We want a lot faster tempo, that allows to use our bench more, allows us to keep fresh legs, we've been able to wear teams down that didn't have much depth."
The Seminoles followed that win by going down 17-6 after one quarter to host Lanier, but rallying for a 59-52 victory. Starting guards Turner and Caneshe Green led Salem with 16 points each.
"We struggled moving the ball early in the first quarter, got off to a really cold start," Wilkins said. "Our defense kicked in."
Salem finished the tournament with a game against Northview on Tuesday that ended too late for this edition.
