COVINGTON -- Donations and volunteers are being sought for the annual Thanksgiving dinner for those in need, hosted by the Newton County Ministers Union and the Newton County Community Food Pantry.
The dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Newton County Theme School at Ficquett, located at 2207 Williams St.
More than 800 people were served last year, said Rosalee Thompson, director of the Community Food Pantry. In addition to a hot meal, attendees will be treated to performances by local church choirs and karate students.
"Those that don't have a place, this is a place to go," she said.
Donations of canned green beans, corn and cranberry sauce are needed, along with pre-browned rolls and desserts. Food items can be dropped off at the food pantry, located at 7125 Turner Lake Circle, Monday through Wednesday of next week. Call the pantry at 770-784-0037 to make sure someone is on duty there before bringing donations.
Volunteers are also needed to prepare and serve the meal. Preparation, including peeling potatoes, making potato salad, washing and preparing turkeys and gravy, will begin at noon Wednesday at Ficquett. Volunteers can drop by or call the food pantry ahead of time to let organizers know they are coming.
Meals are also delivered to shut-ins on Thanksgiving Day. Those who want to be added to the delivery list should also call the food pantry.
