Loosely based on the Shakespeare play "Romeo and Juliet," "West Side Story" is the most honored movie musical of all-time. Winning 10 Oscars including Best Picture, the film quickly caught fire with audiences (read: heterosexual males) generally not fond of the musical genre and spawned the greatest selling album of the 1960s. As a musical with lots of color, action and camera movement, it makes an ideal candidate for a Blu-ray overhaul and the painstaking detail to attention during the transfer shows. No movie this old deserves to look or sound this good.
