ATLANTA (AP) — A beluga whale at the world's largest fish tank is pregnant.
The Georgia Aquarium announced Wednesday morning that 17-year-old Maris is expected to give birth to her first calf in spring 2012. She's lived at the aquarium since it opened in 2005 on loan from the New York Aquarium.
First pregnancies are often unsuccessful in cetaceans.
The Georgia Aquarium is one of just six North American aquariums and zoos that have beluga whales, which are endangered.
