The Rockdale basketball teams got off to a fine start last Saturday in Gwinnett County.
The boys, who reached the Class AAAA state championship game a year ago, held off Collins Hill, 85-82 in overtime. Guard C.J. Wilson, one of the top players in Region 8-AAAA, led the way with 29 points, while Charles Moore added 22 and David Jelks grabbed 14 rebounds to go along with seven points and a pair of blocked shots.
In the first game of the day, the girls got new head coach Sherri Williams a win in her debut, defeating the host Eagles 55-44 behind 18 points from Breanna Richardson.
Williams said the road trip to start the season did not affect her veteran team.
Its nice to get a win, said Williams. I feel the girls have adjusted to the offense and defense that were bringing to them and that going on the road was not going to be a problem.
Kree Clark chipped in with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Brianna Lawrence, who on Wednesday will sign with Tennessee State University, added nine points, seven blocks and seven steals.
