CONYERS -- Relay for Life is gearing up for its 2012 campaign.
Relay for Life will hold its kickoff event Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Rockdale Career Academy.
The event will serve as a way to recruit teams and give an official start to the "Relay season."
"We're trying to get people aware to get teams together and get people out there," said Lisa Cook, Relay for Life co-chair. "Our ultimate goal is to get people out there."
Relay for Life is a national fundraising effort for the American Cancer Society. It is also the largest fundraising effort for the society.
Relay for Life teams participate in an overnight relay-style walking event. Rockdale County's Relay for Life will take place April 27, 2012 at the International Horse Park in Conyers.
Rockdale County's Relay for Life has been active for about 20 years, according to Cook. The money raised by Relay is given to the national organization for cancer education and research.
"People keep asking, 'How do we see it in our county?'" Cook said. "Well, most of the money does go to the national organization. But it also goes to services like Look Good, Feel Better, which helps women with cancer by doing makeovers and wig parties. They also help sometimes provide transportation for cancer patients to and from chemo. Any of the money that we do raise goes to that too."
Rockdale Relay for Life raised $135,000 in 2011. Cook said the goal for 2012 was between $150,000 and $160,000.
The kickoff will be a dinner catered by Pippin's Barbecue and door prizes will also be available.
Cook said the event is "low-key," and will focus on providing teams with information about Relay for Life.
"The kickoff itself is to try to get the teams and this year's -- 2012 -- Relay up and running, and more people out to participate," she said.
