MOUNT AIRY -- Kevin Ellison is almost there. The Habersham Central quarterback had another big night running the ball and got to within 24 yards of 2,000 for the season and Pat Burns scored three rushing touchdowns as the Raiders had no trouble with Rockdale, winning 34-7 in the regular-season finale.
Habersham will be the No. 4 seed out of Region 8-AAAA when the state playoffs begin next weekend. After a three year absence, the Raiders return to the postseason for the first time since the 2007 team reached the quarterfinals.
"It's just great. We got a great group of seniors, there's 20 of them, they're very good leaders," said fourth-year Habersham coach Stuart Cunningham. "We're proud that we've made it. We just know that this region has a very good reputation, and we're just excited to be a part of (the playoffs) again. We're just glad to get back where we feel comfortable which is in the playoffs. Any time you go in this region you know you've done something special."
Ellison, an uncommitted senior, also added to his passing yardage total, getting to the 900 mark for the 6-4 Raiders. He helped Habersham add to its lead with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Brandt Rinehart and a 94-yard scoring run of his own late in the game.
Rockdale finished the season 1-9, having lost its final nine games after a season-opening victory against Madison County.
