Robert Phillips of the Georgia Wildlife Federation points out a Tupelo gum tree that is located in the wetland area at the Alcovy Conservation Center near the federation offices on Hazelbrand Road. The tree is a rarity as far north as Newton County and is usually only found farther south. For those 14 and older who want to learn more about area wetlands and steps that can be taken to preserve them, the GWF is hosting an Adopt-A-Wetland Training Workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7.
