Area art camps available for children

COVINGTON -- For children looking for a cool place inside this summer to express their creativity, several area organizations are offering art camps.

The Arts Association in Newton County is having its annual Creative Kids Camp from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. June 6 through 10 from at Oxford College. It's open to rising first- through sixth-graders, but third- and fourth-grade classes already are full.

It will feature singing, instruments, drama and visual art.

Each afternoon, professional performers will be at the camp. They include Jeff Johnson with BB Fuzz, violinist Emily Yewell, the Manga African Dance Troop and the Capital City Opera. The students will perform on the last day of camp.

"We are looking forward to it," said Abigail Coggin, program director at the Arts Association. "It's always a fun and exciting camp."

Also, the Arts Association is having a musical theater camp from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 11 through 23 at Newton High School.

The cost is for the art camp is $225 and includes lunch, and the cost for the musical theater camp is $150. Scholarships are available.

The Conyers Rockdale Council for the Arts is offering its ArtSmart Camp in two sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 13 through 16 and June 20 through 23 at Memorial Middle School.

Kids can choose from drawing, watercolor, acting, pottery, music or additional visual arts to study at the camps.

The cost is $150, but lunch is not provided.

CRCA also is offering a musical drama camp this summer. It is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m July 11 through 23 and includes a special performance at the end of the camp.

The cost is $100 and is held at the Rockdale Auditorium.

Southern Heartland Art in Covington also is offering several art camps this summer.

Its art camp has four sessions this year, with two different curriculums for parents who wish to send their children to more than one camp, said Susan Wahl at Southern Heartland.

Session one includes two camps that are the same curriculum -- from June 13 through 16 and July 11 through 14.

Session two's first camp is June 27 through 30 and the second camp is July 18 through 21.

Each art camp runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the fee is $165.

Partial scholarships are available for parents who need some assistance, and discounts are available for siblings of attendees.
