CONYERS — The latest chapter in the "American Pie" movie franchise is being filmed in Rockdale County, according to local economic development officials.
Glenn Sears, executive director of the Conyers Rockdale Economic Development Council, revealed Thursday that the production company started shooting this week and will stay in the community through August to finish the film.
The production company is in the same warehouse off of Sigman Road that was recently used by "Fast Five" as a studio and production space.
They will also be filming at Heritage High School, Newton High School, Olde Town Conyers and Costley Mill Park, as well as locations in Atlanta.
The movie chronicles the 10-year reunion of the original American Pie characters and features much of the same cast, including Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott, Mena Suvari, Jason Biggs, Tara Reid, Jennifer Coolidge, Chris Klein and Thomas Ian Nicholas, according to media reports.
Sears said movie productions have a huge economic impact on the community and is definitely part of the economic strategy for the city of Conyers and Rockdale County.
Sears noted Conyers has something to brag about with "Fast Five." He said the Vin Diesel action movie was the first $100 million budget film shot in Georgia.
"They spent $3 million here in just buying stuff — lumber, concrete, food, water, supplies — and then they paid $4 million in local salaries," Sears said. "So if you take that $4 million and say 25 percent went toward the rent, that leaves $3 million spent. On a rough cut, a county that lives on sales tax through the SPLOST and the HOST, that's $180,000 that went toward three sales taxes."
"American Reunion" follows other movies and television shows filmed in Rockdale and Newton counties, such ask "Joyful Noise," starring Dolly Parton, Queen Latifah and Kris Kristofferson, a remake of 1985's "Teen Wolf" and the The CW television series, "The Vampire Diaries."
