CONYERS -- Rockdale County Fire and Rescue officials are assuring residents smoke alarms they received through the department's Smoke Alarm Program are not included in the recent counterfeit smoke alarm recall by the city of Atlanta.

A statement released by the Rockdale County government said the smoke alarms distributed by the Fire and Rescue Department are FireX and Kidde brand alarms. The statement said Fire and Rescue "reassures residents of the county that the alarms are legitimate and are not being recalled."

Sharon Webb, Rockdale County's fire educator, said her department has received numerous calls from residents following media coverage of Atlanta's smoke alarm recall.

Rockdale Fire and Rescue offers a free home inspection program for residents age 60 and over and provides a smoke alarm free of charge.

Rockdale's smoke alarm program has distributed hundreds of smoke alarms to residents at no charge and is deemed a success in providing the extra seconds needed for escape in the event of a fire.

Concern over the smoke alarms arose after news reports last month of findings in an FBI investigation of counterfeit inspection labels on smoke alarms distributed through Atlanta's Smoke Alarm Program.

The federal investigation led Atlanta fire officials to recall all photoelectric smoke alarms distributed through their smoke alarm program.

The federal investigation stems from the discovery of smoke alarms that had counterfeit Underwriters Laboratories labels. Since the smoke alarms were not evaluated to UL's safety requirements for smoke alarms they were never authorized to bear the UL mark, according to a press release from the Atlanta Fire Department.

The smoke alarms being recalled in Atlanta were purchased from Silver Sails Inc., a vendor based in Calabasas, Calif. Atlanta Fire and Rescue has a recall hotline, 404-546-2733, and email smokealarm@atlantaga.gov.

Webb encourages residents to have working smoke detectors in their homes. For more information, call Webb at 770-278-8453, or email sharon.webb@rockdalecounty.org.
