COVINGTON -- A Georgia State Patrol trooper from Post 46 in Monroe shot and killed a man who had threatened that he had a gun following a traffic stop in Oxford Wednesday afternoon, according to the GSP spokesman Gordy Wright.
The man has been identified as Timothy S. Morris, 33, of Oxford.
Wright said the trooper attempted to make the stop around 3:15 p.m. on a vehicle that was speeding on Gum Creek Road in Newton County.
"The vehicle fled and turned into a drive off Gum Creek Trail," Wright said. "The driver fled on foot into a wooded area with the trooper in foot pursuit."
Newton County Sheriff's Offices spokesman Lt. Mark Mitchell said the wooded area was in the area of Lobhaugh Lane.
Wright said the Morris was cornered and threatened the trooper that he had a gun while having his hands in his pockets.
"The trooper fired when the suspect made a sudden move," Wright said. "Morris was taken to Newton Medical Center where he died around 4:30."
Wright said knives were found on Morris.
Mitchell said investigators with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the NCSO were on the scene looking into the circumstances of the shooting.
