Bill Aiken, Newton County School System's 2002 Teacher of the Year, passed away last week. After attending Heard-Mixon Elementary School as a young child and retiring from the army in 1986, he came back to Heard-Mixon to pursue his teaching career. He taught at Heard-Mixon for
16 years until his retirement in 2005. Aiken was a passionate supporter of the 4-H and D.A.R.E programs. Visitation and funeral services were held earlier this week. After Aiken was announced as TOTY, he was able to drive a canary, yellow convertible from Covington Ford for a while.
