Newton High School seniors Christian Sewell and Joshua Hudson proudly carry the torch during opening ceremonies of the Newton County Special Olympics, which began Monday morning at Sharp Field. Lending a helping hand is Covington Fire Department firefighter Brett Madsen. Games and activities will continue through Wednesday, with more than 600 athletes and 500 volunteers participating. In addition to Sewell and Hudson, graduating senior Special Olympians from each of the county's high schools participated in the torch relay. They are Jordan Deshields, Anthony Fox, Monique Goodspeed, all of Alcovy High School; Alex Farmer, Coco Heard, Sarah Maddox, Alexis Neal, Hope Tweedell and Sidney Wesley, all of Eastside High School; and Tracell Chappell, Candace Howard, Keondra Lewis and Carolina Wise, all of Newton High School.
