COVINGTON -- Registration is under way for the Covington Family YMCA's 10th annual Cheerios Challenge, set for Saturday, April 16.
The event has been growing in popularity, and last year a record setting 1,029 walkers and runners participated. The event includes a 10K/5K road race and 1-mile fun run/walk. This year, Cheerios Challenge will be USATF certified and a Peachtree Road Race qualifier.
The event is one for the whole family, said YMCA Membership Director Kacie Brown. Last year, "We had about a 6-week-old baby in a onesie. They had screen printed our T-shirt on it. We have kids in strollers and 3-year-olds trying to do the 1-mile and parents with strollers behind them. We have people in the 75 and older category that participate," she said.
The Cheerios Challenge is part of the YMCA's annual Healthy Kids Day and vendors will be on hand at the YMCA with health-related information, along with activities for children and a few characters, such as the Y's mascot, Y Bear, and the Chick-fil-A cows.
The starting and finishing points will be the YMCA at 2140 Newton Drive. The 10K race begins at 7:30 a.m. with the 1-mile fun run/walk starting at 9 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30 a.m.
Registration is ongoing through April 12. The cost is $15 for the 10K or 5K or $20 on race day. To register for both the 10K and 5K, it's $25 to register or $35 on race day. The fun run charge is $12 or $15 on race day. A family pack of four costs $45 or $60 on race day.
A $100 cash prize will go to the first male and female runner to break the course record in the 10K and 5K. Awards in various age groups will be given at the end of the races.
