Novice knitter Sydney Duren of Covington tries to master "casting on" as part of her knitting instruction at her class at Newton County Library on Tuesday afternoon. Since crafts such as knitting, crochet and embroidery have become hobbies rather than necessities, there are fewer relatives to pass on the expertise of handcrafts. Classes have become popular and part-time library employee and knitting instructor Gabrielle Green teaches the free class for youngsters from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the children's department of the library.
