OXFORD -- Relay for Life is just more than a month away but it's never too early to start raising money. The Palmer Stone/Oxford Cares Relay for Life Team is hosting Hit, Run and Ride for a Cure! Saturday on the Quad at Oxford College, an event featuring tennis, a walk/run, motorcycle ride and more. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.
Students and staff at Palmer Stone Elementary School and Oxford College joined forces last year to raise $16,000 for Relay for Life.
"We were the top team in the county. This year we're going to branch out and see if we can raise more," said Team Captain Janice Alexander.
Registration for the walk/run will take place from 7:30 to 8 a.m. and is $15 per person, or $5 for students age 12 and under. The 5K race will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the fun run at 9 a.m. Participants are encouraged to walk in honor or memory of a loved one who has battled cancer and will have the chance to make signs with their loved one's name to pin on the back of their shirts.
A round robin "socially competitive play" tennis tournament will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is $20 per player.
Finally, a motorcycle ride through the back roads of Newton County will take place at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The cost is $20 for single riders and $30 for double riders.
The Palmer-Stone chorus and music teacher Jeff Johnson will provide entertainment. Raffles and a silent auction will be held throughout the event, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and food will be available for purchase. T-shirts designed by a Palmer Stone art teacher will also be for sale. There will also be free games for children.
"Come out, participate and help us have a fun day raising money to find a cure," Alexander said.

Relay for Life will take place April 29 and 30 at The Church at Covington.
