COVINGTON -- Students starting middle school in Newton County next year have a chance to prepare this summer for an important transition period.
Middle school staff said it is important for rising sixth-grade students and their parents to prepare for and adjust to changes that come with being a middle school student.
This summer, each Newton County School System middle school will hold a day camp for students to learn about:
* clubs, connection classes and physical education;
* college and career awareness and readiness strategies;
* school rules, discipline and the dress code;
* lockers;
* the importance of regular attendance;
* study skills and organization; and
* school schedules.
Students also will tour the school and meet other students and teachers, as well as learn how to use agendas and change classes.
Clements Middle School will hold a day camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 28; doors will open at 8:45 a.m.
Preregistration costs $15 in the form of a money order and ends July 15. On-site registration the day of the camp costs $20; registration includes a T-shirt and a goody bag. Students also can win a door prize.
Students must bring a sack lunch and are asked to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
Cousins Middle School will hold a day camp from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 29; doors will open at 8:45 a.m.
Registration costs $5 and is due by Thursday.
Indian Creek Middle School will hold a day camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 29; doors will open at 8:45 a.m.
Preregistration costs $15 and is due by Thursday. On-site registration the day of the event costs $20; registration includes a T-shirt.

Liberty Middle School will hold a camp from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 29.

Veterans Memorial Middle School will hold its day camp from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 28; doors will open at 9 a.m.
Preregistration was due May 20. The registration fee is $10 in the form of cash or a check and includes a T-shirt. Sizes cannot be guaranteed for those who didn't preregister.
