COVINGTON -- Newton High School will have at least one more claim to fame before it gets replaced in a couple of years.
The school, which is being phased out of state funding and is scheduled to be replaced with a new building at a site off Crowell Road in 2013, will be the setting of a major motion picture and earn a little money for the Newton County School System, too.
The Newton County Board of Education last week unanimously approved an application for use of school facilities by the production company Reunion Committee LLC for the filming of "American Reunion" in parts of the school in July.
The movie is part of the "American Pie" series that began in 1999 and includes much of the original cast, such as Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Shannon Elizabeth and Seann William Scott, who are all back in town for a class reunion and dealing with growing up, according to the Internet Movie Database. The movie is expected to be released in April 2012.
The film company will use the school's gym for a reunion prom set, football field, commons area and hallways. The set could have up to 150 crew members and 200 extras at one time and would need access to parking areas at both NHS and Porterdale Elementary School, as well as the NHS cafeteria, according to a request from the company.
Film dates are scheduled to run from July 11 through 15, and the company would need access to the school from July 5 through 22. The contract calls for the company to be off the school property after July 27.
The company will pay $10,000 to NCSS for using the school from July 5 through 22 and will provide for cleanup and make any necessary repairs, according to Dennis Carpenter, deputy superintendent of operations at NCSS. He said the money will go into the district's general fund, as do all facility rental funds.
Carpenter has said that the schedule should not interfere with summer band, athletic and art programs going on at the school during the same time.
Carpenter said school Principal Craig Lockhart hopes to negotiate more scenes being filmed at the school in the future.
Acme Casting Co. is handling extras casting for the area. The movie is currently filming in Conyers and also is expected to shoot in Monroe.
