COVINGTON -- The students are gone, the grades are calculated and the classrooms are packed away -- it's summer for the Newton County School System.
Starting this week and continuing through July 15, the NCSS Central Office, which is located at 2109 Newton Drive N.E. in Covington, will be open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It is closed on Fridays and on July 4 for observance of the Independence Day holiday.
Normal hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Over the summer, the Newton County Board of Education is expected to meet on an altered schedule.
The school board is expected to meet June 7 for a monthly work session and June 14 for a regular monthly meeting. The board also will meet on July 19 for a combined meeting. All school board meetings are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the board room at the Newton County BOE building, which also is located at 2109 Newton Drive NE in Covington.
Teachers and staff are expected to report back to schools on July 29 or Aug. 1 for the 2011-12 school year, and students are scheduled to return on Thursday, Aug. 4.
Over the summer, some facilities may be open for training and other special activities.
Complete NCSS and BOE calendars are available on the NCSS website, www.newtoncountyschools.org.
