On any other normal day, seeing a "baby on board" sign usually just makes me smile.
But not last Friday. Last Friday things were a little different for me when I saw that sign on a car headed into the office. But then I just tossed it up to a fleeting thought.
Last Friday was also my birthday. About 3 o'clock in the afternoon, I received news that would indeed change the rest of my life.
My husband Kevin and I are going to have a new addition to our family; the doctors say he or she should be here on March 25.
Now, talk about a birthday present! That is the best birthday present ever.
I think the news is still sinking in for the both of us. I will look at Kevin every once and while and say "We are having a baby." And we both just grin from ear to ear.
We've already received all kinds of parenting advice, statements like "your lives will never be the same," and things of the sort.
But what has really stuck out in my mind has been the overwhelming response of love and excitement that has come out of our family and friends. I can't help but think about how incredibly loved our child will be by so many people.
That is one of the things that makes my heart smile -- to know that we are surrounded by such a God-loving family and friends who love the Lord as well and what an impact they will have on baby Wells.
That is just enough to make me cry, to think about all of the things that our child will learn from those we hold so close to our heart.
The other thing that just makes my heart burst with joy is knowing that God picked Kevin and me to be this child's parents. What a blessing.
I am looking forward to the fact that our lives will never be the same. As a matter of fact, some things have already changed in our lives and so they should.
I'm also looking forward to being a mommy. I have witnessed many of the kids that Kevin and I already call extended nieces and nephews run to the arms of their moms and dads. The expression on the parents' faces when that child is running up to them is just about the sweetest picture in the world.
As I think about that, I think about how excited it must make Jesus when we "run" to Him and talk to Him. I'm so looking forward to sharing with our kid who Jesus is. I can't wait.
So there you have it folks. We are going to be parents and we are so ecstatic about it.
I'll never forget July 22, 2011, the day we found out that God granted us the blessing of becoming a mommy and daddy. More now than ever, we will rely on Him to guide us through the next phase of our lives.
