COVINGTON -- Although students may still be enjoying sleeping in late or hanging out by the pool, the first day of school is right around the corner.
Parents and students in all grade levels in the Newton County School System are encouraged to attend a scheduled open house at their assigned school beginning next week, so they can get a head start on the new school year, which begins Thursday, Aug. 4.
"We encourage parents to attend Open House if possible, especially if they are new to our district," said Sherri Davis-Viniard, director of Public Relations at NCSS. "Parent involvement is extremely important, and the school open houses provide parents a great opportunity to visit the school and meet teachers and administrators and ask questions about their child's curriculum, schedule, bus and car rider rules and general expectations for the year."
All elementary schools will hold open houses from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 3, while middle schools will hold their open houses at the same time on Aug. 2.
"The elementary and middle school open houses are held prior to the first day of school so those students have the added benefit of meeting their teachers in advance," Viniard said. "At the elementary level, children also have the opportunity to visit their classroom and maybe even find their desk. For the younger boys and girls, that can really help ease a little bit of the anxiety of starting school."
High school open house times are scheduled after the new school year starts. Parents and students are encouraged to visit schools from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Aug. 8.
More information about the open houses is available at the student's assigned school and also on the NCSS website, www.newtoncountyschools.org, which links to individual school websites.
