COVINGTON -- Parents, students and other community members in Newton County, especially District 1, are invited to a school forum to talk more in depth about issues in education.

District 1 Newton County Board of Education member Jeff Meadors is holding his first District 1 school forum next week.

Meadors, who was elected in November and began his four-year term in January, plans to hold District 1 School Forum: School Board on Your Corner at 7 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium at Alcovy High School, which is located at 14567 Ga. Highway 36 in Covington.

"This is not an event about school personnel or people," Meadors said. "This event is about issues and as many answers to questions as I can share."

Although the forum is targeted to District 1 residents, all Newton County residents are welcomed to attend, Meadors said.

"I cannot speak for the full board and can make no decisions or representation outside of the official board meetings," he said, adding that he will be the only school board member speaking at the event. "I do want to hear concerns on the issues and would appreciate thoughtful ideas and possible solutions."

District 1 schools include Alcovy High School and Heard Mixon, Mansfield and Rocky Plains elementary schools.

At the forum, Meadors plans to provide updates from the Georgia School Board Association's June conference and policy updates on Senate and House bills. He also plans to have a question and answer session.

"While I have some things to share, it is primarily a listening event, where I can gather district questions, concerns and ideas," he said. "There may be 10 folks who attend; there may be 50. At any rate, I will be present to answer as many questions as I can and to direct folks to the appropriate channels to have questions answered."
