Councilman Keith Dalton is running for re-election to the Post 3, East Ward seat.

Dalton will finish his first term on the Covington City Council this year.

"As tough economic times as we're having right now, I think it's more important than ever for my conservative voice to be on the council," he said.

Dalton said he's most proud of the work the council has done to trim the city's budget and reduce the size of local government during the last four years.

"I'd like to keep working on the budget and lean up the government a little bit and keep working in that direction," he said.

Dalton said his highest priority is to hold down costs while not raising taxes and putting an additional financial burden on citizens.

"First and foremost, I try to be fiscally responsible and look out for what's best for all the citizens. I'm not a pet project kind of guy or a special interest group kind of guy. I try to look at the interests of everybody," he said.

Dalton said citizens who watch the City Council meetings on the local government channel should be familiar with his no-nonsense, straightforward approach.

"Any of the voters watching know my voting record and know how I stand on issues. If they would like having me back, it would be my pleasure to serve again. If they don't, I wholeheartedly understand. You will get no surprises from me; you know what you're going to get," he said. "I know more than I did four years ago and I'll come back and work just as hard as the first four years."

Dalton, 46, is a 1983 graduate of Newton High School. He served as a city police officer from 1987 to 1992 and was chief of police in Oxford until 1998. He currently owns a janitorial and lawn maintenance service, Covington Window Cleaners Inc. He also is active in local fund-raising efforts for the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life event and is a member and fund-raiser with the local Elks Lodge. Dalton and his wife Kim have two daughters.

Dalton so far is the only candidate to announce for Post 3, East Ward.

Qualifying for the Municipal Elections takes place Aug. 29 - Sept. 2.
