COVINGTON -- A Newton County man is recovering from injuries he received a week ago when he was robbed and beaten.
According to the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred in an undeveloped subdivision off Cowan Road about noon July 14.
NCSO Public Information Officer Deputy Courtney Morrison said the site of the robbery and assault was adjacent to a mobile home park located at 67 Cowan Road, near Salem Road.
"The victim was lured into the undeveloped neighborhood, by what means it is unknown at this time," she said.
Once in the secluded area, three men assaulted the 42-year-old victim, striking him multiple times with a pipe.
"During the process of beating him, a cellphone and money were removed from his person," Morrison said.
The victim was seen sitting in the front yard of a nearby home, bleeding profusely and authorities were called to the scene. Deputies who responded to the incident said the man was bleeding from his forehead, just above his nose, and his arm; his left eye was swollen shut; and he complained of pain in the area of his ribs.
Emergency medical technicians transported him to an area hospital for treatment.
Morrison said the victim was able to identify his attackers who were subsequently arrested. The suspects and their charges are:
* Austin Shane McNutt, 18, 12057 Brown Bridge Road, aggravated battery, armed robbery; intimidation; taking control of substance.
* Thomas Dean Smith, 21, 105 Cowan Road, aggravated battery, armed robbery; intimidation; taking control of substance.
* William Lee Suits, 25, 67 Cowan Road, Lot 8, aggravated battery, armed robbery.
