CONYERS — Officials at Rockdale County Public Schools hope local organizations and businesses might be able to help out with the first district parent academy.

They are seeking vendors like local nonprofit agencies, health care providers, faith-based organizations and businesses to help sponsor the event.

"We want to help parents and guardians make connections with community organizations and local businesses," said April Fallon, director of Community and Student Support at RCPS. "This (event) will provide our families with valuable resources and provide vendors the opportunity to meet face-to-face with potential customers and answer any questions that people may have."

The parent academy is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Rockdale Career Academy, which is located at 1064 Culpepper Drive, off Parker Road, in Conyers.

Classes include couponing, gardening, cyberbullying, financial planning, preparing for college, resume writing and more. A snack breakfast and barbecue lunch are free, and free child care for children under 8 will be provided by the Rockdale Early Learning Initiative.

"The academy was designed by parents, community partners and RCPS staff with the intention of providing information from which parents and guardians can benefit," said Fallon. "The theme for the event is ‘Make a PACT (Parents and Children Together) and Be There for Your Child.' Be There is a national campaign designed to inspire families to be more involved in their child's education."

The event is sponsored by the STARS Community Partnership, a local community collaborative funded by the federal Safe Schools Healthy Students initiative. STARS, or Support Team for All Rockdale Students, aims to provide safe and orderly schools and support services for all students by sponsoring certain programs at all grade levels and schools.

For the August event, vendors can rent space in the commons area for $25 and a door prize donation. Participants can register to win an iPad, restaurant gift cards, gas cards and other prizes.

"It's really a win-win situation for everyone," Fallon said.

Those interested in being a vendor at the event should call RCPS at 770-761-1446.
