Car show to benefit the military

COVINGTON — Rose King knows all about sacrificing for the greater good. She has six family members in the military, including one son serving in Afghanistan and one set to deploy in January.

Taking care of the troops is a matter close to her heart, so King decided she would do something locally to provide support to servicemen and women. She has organized a car show called Hazzard County Supports Our Troops to benefit Operation Sandbox, a nonprofit organization that sends care packages to soldiers overseas.

The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 30, on the Square in downtown Covington.

"There are people overseas whose families have disowned them because they joined the military. They need support; they're fighting for our freedom. Or there are families who just can't afford (to send care packages)," King said.

King is hosting the event with support from the New England Dukes and Hazzard Life groups.

Anyone with antique cars or replicas of cars used in "The Dukes of Hazzard" television series is asked to participate. There is no entry fee and no advance notice is needed: Just show up to the Square before the event begins to sign in.

Cars that will be featured include replicas of the General Lee, the double zero race car that raced the General Lee on the TV show; Hazzard County police cars and other antique vehicles. A Boss Hog impersonator will provide entertainment and a group called Hazzard Life will perform.

The car show is free to the public, but donations to Operation Sandbox are requested. Food items needed include the following: beef jerky; coffee; flavored drink mixes (single packets); granola bars; assorted nuts; microwaveable food, such as popcorn, instant macaroni and cheese; gum; hard candy; cracker packs; tuna or SPAM in foil packs only; trail mix; Beanee Weenies. Chocolate and items containing or packaged in glass cannot be shipped.

Other items accepted will be travel sized deodorant, lip palm, shampoo/conditioner and other hygiene items along with writing supplies; disposable razors; batteries, size AA, AAA and C; DVDs; baby wipes and hand sanitizer.
