COVINGTON -- Newton County School System's Deputy Superintendent Dennis Carpenter wasn't chosen for the top position at Peach County Schools.
Carpenter was one of three finalists up for the superintendent job in Peach County.
After a three-hour special called meeting on Thursday morning, the Peach County Board of Education chose Joe Ann Denning as the superintendent to replace former Superintendent Susan Clark. Denning was the director of Student Services for Peach County Schools.
The two were up against Dr. Christy Johnson, assistant superintendent at Carroll County Schools, and they were chosen out of 34 qualified applicants.
"I was very impressed with Dr. Carpenter," said Sara Mason, parent-community liaison for Peach County Schools.
She said although Denning is one of their own, when she met all of the finalists, she admired each of them.
"I knew we'd be OK with any of them," Mason said. "I wish him all of the luck."
Carpenter was hired as associate superintendent for Human Resources at NCSS in February 2008 after working as assistant superintendent for Support Services in Appling County Schools and as a fourth-grade teacher, assistant principal and principal before that. He was named deputy superintendent for operations in July 2009, when Deborah Robertson retired as associate superintendent of business and administration; he oversees human resources, business and finance, transportation, school nutrition, purchasing, energy and construction and maintenance and operations.
In October 2009, Carpenter completed the Georgia School Superintendents Association's Superintendent Professional Development Program, a two-year course of study to prepare individuals for local superintendent positions.
In July 2010, the national Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development selected Carpenter as one of 30 educators in the nation for its 2010 class of Emerging Leaders. The program prepares young, ambitious educators to fulfill ASCD leadership roles and empower each cohort to make an impact on education policy and practice on a local and national level.
