Merryvale Assisted Living in Oxford was named the Dick James Small Business of the Year at the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting on Thursday night at DeKalb Tech. Merryvale, which opened in 1996 and has expanded three times, serves a variety of needs in the senior community. Accepting the award from Chamber President Hunter Hall is Merryvale Director Gena McClendon. The Dick James Small Business Award is named in honor of the late Dick James, a long-time president of the Chamber of Commerce. It was created in 2000 to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of small businesses in Newton County. Also presented at the Annual Meeting was the R.O. Arnold Award, generally considered to be the most prestigious award given in Newton County. This year's recipient was Dr. Melvin O. Baker, a dentist and community volunteer. Baker could not be present to accept the award. Please see a future edition of the Citizen for a full story on Baker's achievements.
