Piedmont Academy held its football banquet for their state championship team recently.

The athletes, their families and friends had a tremendous amount to be proud of after winning a football state championship for the first time in school history. The affair was held at Charlie Elliott Conference Center in Mansfield. Decorations included memorabilia from the season and poster-size collages of photographs.

Athletic Director Danny Camp welcomed everyone to the event, and the program began shortly after everyone had enjoyed their meal.

Cheerleading Coach Elizabeth Davis introduced her squad giving recognition to scholar athlete Briana Bailey. She also gave her goodbye to the cheerleading squad's lone senior, Morgan Brooks, and cougar mascot, Jordana Pope.

Speaker Gary Pierce, a member of the 1980 Olympic Boxing Team, gave a spiritual and motivational speech to the young men and women making an emphasis that "it is not the size of the individual, but the fight in the individual." He also emphasized for them to do the right thing.

Pierce was followed by former Atlanta Falcon player, Allen Rossum, who also played college football for Lou Holtz at Notre Dame. He went on to play for the Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2004.

Rossum was one of the most consistent returners in the league during his 12-year career. That consistency has put him in the top five of all-time return leaders and he currently sits in first among active players in both punt and kickoff return yards. He is the only player in NFL history to have a kickoff return for a touchdown with five different teams. He encouraged the ball players to set goals and be the best at obtaining their goals. He complimented the team on achieving a championship by becoming one.

Coach Rhett Famer introduced his team and had sincere and kind statements towards each individual player. Coach Farmer also recognized GISA All-Region members, Peter Lawson, Blake Hammock, Alex Hall, Dylan Collins, Rhett Roberts, Dakota Collins, Daniel Leinweber, Jakey Dunagan, Seth Harvey, Austin Corley; All-Region Honorable Mention, Zach Benjamin, Sam Cleary, Tyler Cullum, Justin Wilson and Garrett Richardson.

All-State members included Peter Lawson, Alex Hall, Blake Hammock, Dylan Collins, Dakota Collins, Jakey Dunagan, honorable mention to Daniel Leinweber, Seth Harvey, and Rhett Roberts.

Seniors Rhett Roberts and Blake Hammock participated in the GISA All-Star ballgame back in December. Other honors included "GHSA All Middle Georgia" Blake Hammock; "GISA All Middle Georgia" Blake Hammock, Dylan Collins, Jakey Dunagan, Peter Lawson; honorable mention to Alex Hall and Dakota Collins.
