The grand opening of Porter Memorial Branch Library will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Local and state officials will make brief comments followed by a ribbon cutting. Light refreshments will be served.
"We are very excited to have the opportunity to show off our new branch library. We have been open since early in the month and already we have had wonderful comments from the public," said Acting Library Director Bob Halcums. "Everyone seems to be amazed at the size and beauty of the building and they have been checking out books and DVDs as quickly as we can get them shelved. It took quite a team effort including the county commissioners, the state legislature and state library, the Library Board of Trustees, the general contractor with the sub-contractors, the architectural firm, the current library staff and, of course, the citizens of Newton County, to make this a reality. At the grand opening on Sunday all of these visionary people will be gathered in one location where we can give a collective 'thank-you' to everyone."
The Porter Memorial Branch Library is located at 6191 Ga. Highway 212. Regular hours are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. The library is closed on Thursday and Friday.
Hours complement those of the Covington branch library so citizens have access to library services seven days a week. During hours when neither branch is open, the library's Web site can be accessed at www.newtonlibrary.org.
