COVINGTON -- The Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce has rescheduled its annual meeting, which was canceled last week due to inclement weather.

The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at DeKalb Technical College, located at 8100 Bob Williams Parkway.

The Chamber was able to retain Secretary of State Brian Kemp as the keynote speaker. Kemp is expected to speak on economic development, the budget, education funding and other issues of state and local importance.

"We are very pleased to be able to bring Brian Kemp to the Chamber's annual meeting. We were working around his schedule to try to make sure we could secure him again," said Ron Carter, membership director at the Chamber. Previously purchased tickets will be honored at the event.

The event will also include the presentation of the R.O. Arnold Award. Considered to be the most prestigious honor a Newton County resident can receive, the award recognizes a lifetime of community involvement and achievement. The Dick James Small Business of the Year Award and the Spirit of Excellence Award, which recognizes a Chamber volunteer for outstanding contributions, will also be presented.

Current Chamber Chairman Jerry Mays will pass the gavel to Chair-elect Scott Willis and the new slate of officers for 2011 will be approved.

Social time begins at 6:30 p.m. and dinner begins at 7 p.m.
