COVINGTON -- The staff at Newton Medical Birth Care Center had to wait a little longer than usual to celebrate the birth of the first baby of the new year.
Kelbie Wynter Cole arrived at 11:04 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, a healthy 8 pounds and cute as a button. Kelbie wasn't due until Jan. 6, so her parents, Misty and Kristopher Cole, weren't expecting she'd have the honor of being the first baby born in 2011.
"We were excited. We came in on the 31st but it wasn't quite time yet," Misty Cole said. The family was sent back home and two days later, Kelbie entered the world.
By Monday, she was decked out in a polka dot outfit and a pink cap with cat ears, wrapped in a blanket made by her maternal grandmother. Her great-grandmother, Grace Johnson, is a volunteer at the hospital and had already been to visit. Kelbie fussed and fidgeted a bit at the sound of new visitors, but calmed right down when the camera started flashing. Perhaps a career in show business is in her future. Mom just wants her to be content, whatever the future holds.
"I want her to grow up and be happy and have children of her own," she said.
Kelbie joins big brother Tristan, 5. The family lives in Newton County.
