CONYERS -- One Rockdale County school board member now will play a bigger role in state education.

Katrina Young, a member of the Rockdale County Board of Education, recently was elected by the Georgia School Boards Association's District 4 board members to serve as a district director for the GSBA.

"We are extremely pleased to have Mrs. Young join our board of directors," said GSBA Executive Director Sis Henry. "This is an important role and one that demands a high level of leadership."

As the district director, Young will represent Rockdale, Newton, DeKalb and Decatur City school systems on the GSBA Board of Directors.

"I am excited about the opportunity to be more involved as a district director," said Young, who has served on the Rockdale County Board of Education since 2007 and had to have the other members' support to serve as the director. "I firmly believe in public education and its ability to prepare our children for a successful future in this competitive world."

She said her duties will include managing affairs, adopting policies and conducting business of the association, attending meetings, setting legislative priorities, evaluating services and establishing awards, among others.

"I'm excited," said Young, who works at General Mills in Covington.

She will fill the unexpired term of another member until June 30; then she will serve for at least the next term, which runs from July 1 to June 30, 2014.
