COVINGTON -- Parents interested in having their children in a public Newton County prekindergarten program next year can register them beginning next week.
The Newton County School System will hold registration for the district's Georgia lottery funded Pre-K program beginning Monday through Friday.
Registration is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at their zoned elementary school. Students attending the new elementary school on Airport Road should register at Palmer Stone Elementary School and those attending Fairview Elementary School next year should register at Ficquett Elementary School.
NCSS currently has 540 Pre-K slots in 27 classes available -- 40 slots at each elementary school other than the theme school, which has none, plus an extra 20 at Live Oak Elementary School, which has three classes.
Parent or legal guardians must register their children, who must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2011.
At registration, parents must present the child's birth certificate and Social Security card, along with two health forms -- immunization record 3231 and eye, ear and dental screening form 3300.
They also must present two proofs of residence -- an electric, gas, garbage or water bill in the name of the person enrolling the child and a current lease, rental agreement or mortgage statement from the purchase of a home.
Schools will not accept telephone bills, mortgage payment books, post office addresses, car licenses, credit cards or Medicaid cards as proofs of residence.
If the child and parent lives with someone else and doesn't have a proof of address in their name, they also must provide a statement of legal residence or a signed and notarized affidavit, along with two proofs of residence in the name of the person who owns the property.
An affidavit is available at the Newton County Board of Education on Newton Drive or from the elementary schools.
If the child does not live with one or both parents, guardianship or custody documents also must be presented.
Applications and documents are available for download from the Pre-K department page on the NCSS Web site, www.newtoncountyschools.org.
Once a child is completely registered, his name will be entered into a lottery drawing for the zoned school. Once all slots are filled, the remaining names will be placed on a waiting list in the order they are drawn. They will be called if spaces become available.
