COVINGTON -- The Newton County Sheriff's Office has learned that some of the vases missing from Lawnwood Cemetery may have been taken for safekeeping by the families whose loved ones are buried there.
According to the NCSO, approximately 126 brass vases have been stolen from the Access Road location since mid-January. But during the course of their investigation, they have discovered that a few of those may have been purposely removed by family members after they heard about the first thefts.
"If they've picked up a vase for safekeeping, they need to let us or the cemetery know," said NCSO spokesman Lt. Tyrone Oliver.
Oliver said the investigation into the thefts is very active and anyone who may have information concerning the thefts is asked to contact the NCSO by calling 678-625-1400. Tips can be given to the NCSO anonymously at 678-625-5007 or through the website at www.newtonsheriffga.org and clicking on "anonymous tips." Those who want a response from NCSO personnel should leave contact information.
