COVINGTON -- Now that it has been open a month, Porter Memorial Library is expanding its services by kicking off a series of children's programs.
Family activities can be found morning, afternoon and night at the library. For starters, there's Baby and Me Story Time. Held at 11:15 a.m. each Monday, the program features songs, finger plays and stories designed for parents or caregivers and infants ages 6 to 18 months.
Also each Monday, at 7 p.m., the library hosts a PJ Story Time, with children encouraged to wear their pajamas and bring a stuffed animal while they listen to stories and music and play games. The program is designed to promote early literacy and socialization skills and will have a different theme each week.
For teenagers who love Anime, a form of Japanese animation, there's Anime-zing Teen Tuesdays from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Teens will get to decide what types of activities they'd like to pursue. A group at the Newton Branch chose to host an Anime costume party, for example.
Toddlers won't be left out -- at 11:15 a.m. each Wednesday from March 2 through April 27, the library will host Toddle Time, a program that is designed to foster an appetite for reading and educate young children on how to use the library, while encouraging imagination and helping them develop language and listening and motor skills. The program is for toddlers ages 18 to 36 months who are accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
Also on Wednesdays is Stitch with Krish, beginner's crochet class for children age 7 and older that takes place at 6:30 p.m.
Finally, the whole family is invited to join in on the fun with Read a Book as a Family at 3 p.m. on Saturdays beginning March 5. Families can pick out books to read and discuss it the following week, play games and join in a little friendly competition to win the Bookmark Award.
All activities are held in the library meeting room, with the exception of Anime Teen night which will be held in Teen Zone.
The Porter Memorial Branch Library is located at 6191 Ga. Highway 212. Hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. The library is closed on Thursday and Friday.
