COVINGTON -- Though Relay for Life isn't until April, the Newton County committee is already busy raising funds.
The community is encouraged to participate in the third annual Run for Hope 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run, set for Sunday, March 6, at Cousins Middle School, located at 8187 Carlton Trail Northwest.
The 1 mile fun run begins at 2:30 p.m. with the 5K starting at 3 p.m. The route will wind through the historic town of Oxford. Awards will be given to the overall top male and female and the top three male and female finishers in age categories.
Proceeds will benefit Relay for Life, the top fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Last year's race drew 130 runners and raised $1,500, according to Beth Bradley, a member of Relay for Life Committee of Newton County.
Registration is under way through Feb. 26 at a cost of $15. The cost jumps to $20 the day of the race, when registration will begin at 1 p.m.
Registration forms can be obtained at www.relayforlife.org/newtonga under "Documents and Forms." Mail registration forms and fees by Feb. 26 to Victoria Patrick, American Cancer Society, 1684 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, GA, 30605. For more information, call 770-307-7956 or e-mail email@example.com. Checks should be made payable to American Cancer Society.
In related news, Newton County residents who are cancer survivors are invited to attend the free third annual Survivor Banquet from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at The Church at Covington, located at 11975 Ga. Highway 142 in Oxford.
"There will be activities for them to do, a full dinner and dessert and a small program with music," Bradley said. Each individual will receive a cupcake to celebrate his or her "survivor's birthday." Each survivor may bring one caregiver.
