CONYERS — Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in Rockdale County for co-defendants Ntyono Aaron Oketo Pennie, 21, of Conyers and Torrence Sanders, 27, of Lithonia.
Pennie is charged with felony murder, three counts of armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
Sanders is charged with two counts of felony murder, three counts of armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, felony fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and fleeing/attempting to elude.
The men are facing murder and armed robbery charges stemming from the Feb. 23, 2010, incident in which a Newton County woman died in a traffic accident following an armed robbery on Harvest Grove Lane off Iris Drive.
Pennie and Sanders are accused of robbing a group of men at gunpoint at an apartment complex and later crashing their car into another car driven by Shirley Akins, 56, of Covington, who died from the injuries sustained in the crash.
Rockdale County District Attorney Richard Read said Wednesday the prosecution was ready for trial next week after a short motions hearing Friday morning.
Covington attorney Brian Ross is defending Pennie and Decatur attorney Chris Flinn is Sanders' attorney.
